Choosing an SFP module

SFP (1G), SFP+ (10G) and SFP28 (25G) modules plug into switch ports to add fibre or copper connections. Choose the speed, then the media: SX and SR modules use multimode fibre for links within a building, while LX and LR modules use single mode fibre for kilometre-range links. RJ45 copper modules add a standard network port to an SFP slot.

Many switches only accept modules coded for that brand, so choose the version coded for your equipment, or a generic MSA module for switches that accept third-party optics. DAC (direct attach copper) cables are a low-cost, low-power option for linking switches and servers a few metres apart. Pair fibre modules with matching fibre patch leads.
