How USB extenders work

Standard USB cables are limited to about 5m. A USB over CAT5 extender has a local unit that plugs into your computer and a remote unit that connects to the USB device, linked by a single CAT5e or CAT6 cable. That lets you place a webcam, keyboard, printer or other USB device in another part of a room or building. Connect the two units directly with the network cable rather than through a switch.

Check the USB version of each extender against your device: our USB 2.0 extenders support high speed devices at up to 480 Mbps, over 50m or, with the four port model, up to 150m, while the USB 1.1 models suit keyboards, mice and other simple devices. The USB over LAN server is different: it connects up to four USB devices to your network so computers on the network can use them, with a software driver installed on each PC. Need help choosing?
