Choosing bulk network cable
Solid core or stranded?
Solid core cable is used for the permanent runs inside walls, ceilings and trunking that are terminated onto patch panels and wall sockets. Stranded cable is more flexible, which makes it the right choice for making your own patch leads with RJ45 plugs and for cables that will be moved. Make sure you use plugs designed for the cable type you choose.
CAT5e or CAT6?
CAT5e supports Gigabit ethernet over the full 100m. CAT6 has tighter twisted pairs for better protection against crosstalk and also supports 10 Gigabit ethernet up to 55m, so we recommend it for new office installations. More detail in our ethernet cable buying guide.
Pure copper or CCA?
Choose pure copper conductors rather than cheaper copper clad aluminium (CCA). Pure copper has lower resistance, terminates reliably and is the right choice for Power over Ethernet devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones and wireless access points.
LSZH and colours
If your project requires low smoke zero halogen cable, for example in offices, schools, hospitals and public buildings, choose one of our LSZH reels. Cables with a CPR class have been fire tested under the Construction Products Regulation; check which class your building needs. Our reels come in up to 10 colours, so you can colour code your installation by use, such as data, phones, cameras and wireless access points.
Installation tips
- Keep each permanent run to a maximum of 90m, leaving up to 10m for the patch leads at each end, for a total channel of 100m.
- Keep data cables away from mains power cables and fluorescent light fittings where possible.
- Avoid kinking the cable or over-tightening cable ties, which can affect performance.
- Label both ends of every run, then test each link once it is terminated.
You will need a punch down tool, crimper and cable tester to complete your installation.
