About OS2 single mode fibre
Single mode fibre has a tiny 9um core that carries one path of light, so signals travel much further than on multimode: 10km and beyond with the right optics. It is used between buildings, across campuses and sites, and for links from service providers.
Single mode leads must be paired with single mode transceivers (LX, LR, ER and similar) and single mode panels. They do not work with multimode SX or SR optics, and the two fibre types should never be joined in one link. The yellow jacket is the standard colour for single mode, which makes it easy to tell apart in a mixed rack.
